Hello again,

Hope you like the new theme, since I decided to change things up a bit. I really liked the theme I had going before, but it seemed like this might be a good time to change things around. Was going for something metaphorically symbolic of the seasonal change; we’re just about through the holiday season, which leaves us sort of in the thick of winter. Sort of waiting for spring and all the rebirth that comes with it.

Winters here are pretty easy to take compared to back home. (I hear there’s a pile of snow on the ground, and Mrs. G isn’t on good terms with my snowblower, which doesn’t make life very easy!) It did get a little cold here for a few days, and my cappuccino machine was even out of commission for a couple days since the water line froze up! That was a near catastrophe for this caffeine junkie, but we managed to avert disaster and rectify the problem. But now its probably in the 40’s, which means the snow is a little wet and tends to melt off. Its kinda cool the way the snow sort of slides off the tin roofs like big sheets of frosting. There’s not much on the roofs at the moment, but this is what it looked like not so long ago:

Snow, or frosting?

But its warm enough that I think I’ll go for a longer run this weekend if I get the time. Now that I have my gore-tex trail shoes, a little snow is no problem!

Of course, that’s just life according to Lt G. Our soldiers have been working on their driving skills, since the already challenging driving conditions in sector are just made a bit more complicated by the snow and ice. Fortunately, it doesn’t seem like we’ve had any serious accidents so far.

I heard today that folks actually saw me on CNN with the holiday story. Did you catch it? I missed it; would have liked to get a copy of the video clip.

I also realized I forgot to tell you about the Ferizaj School of Music performance here on the 23rd. We were treated to some holiday music by students from the school just down the road, and I must say, I was impressed by their talent. Some of those young musicians could have promising careers ahead of them! The musical selections definitely show-cased their talents, from the soloists, to the keyboard players, to even the rap duo. To be honest, I wasn’t quite sure how that fit, but it was cool nonetheless. But in the end, I think the one that stole the show was the young girl (seemed like she might be 6 or 7) that closed the show with the last lines to ‘we wish you a merry christmas’. That was truly adorable! Thank you to everyone that made that concert possible; it was an unexpected treat that helped to make the holidays feel a little more special.

Anyway, I’m up much too late yet again, so I’ll sign off for now. Cheers!

Merry Christmas from Camp Bondsteel!
